US family investment firm is one of the suitors for Championship club Derby County

An American family investment firm is among a slew of bidders weighing bids to save Derby County, the insolvent Championship football club.

Carlisle Capital, which was founded by members of the Binnie family, owners of a portfolio of media and industrial assets, has been in talks with Derby County's administrators about a deal, Sky News has learned.

Carlisle Capital is one of about five parties deemed credible enough by Quantuma to pursue meaningful discussions with.

However, given the club's financial situation, there are serious doubts about the viability of any deal.

Derby County, managed by former England forward Wayne Rooney, owes around £15 million to MSD Capital, a firm founded by computing billionaire Michael Dell.

Derby County are currently sitting in the Championship relegation zone following a 12-point deduction from falling into administration last month.
